Overview
These 4×6 standup mylar and plastic display bags by MITOB (#ad) are perfect for packaging smaller and denser freeze dried candies like Skittles. I use a combination of cups and mylar bags for our products.
Why I chose these
I use these mylar display bags for smaller events and custom orders because they have nice rounded corners and they look great. These bags come in many different colors and a few different sizes.
While these bags are a bit stiff, they are advertised as being nearly 4 mil per side! which is pretty decent thickness – and thicker material means a little more protection for the contents from oxygen and humidity.
What I put in them
In general, 4″x6″ Gusseted standup mylar bags are going to be…
Great for:
- Skittles
- Lemonheads
- Saltwater Taffy
- Gummy Bears
- Bit-O-Honey
- Caramel M&Ms
- Mini Marshmallows
- Coffee Nips
- Any other small dense candies
Not so great for:
- Nerds Gummy Clusters
- Milk Duds
- Jolly Ranchers
- Caramel Apple Pops
- (Multiple) Peeps
- Any large, fluffy, or fragile candy
Storage / Handling
Mylar display bags are shipped flat and can be stored and stocked to take up very little room (unlike the same number of deli containers).
Likewise, when they are filled, they can be nested “head to toe” in a storage bin pretty easily, but be careful not to crush the contents as they are still bags after all.
The rounded corners are AWESOME for not poking the customer or other bags.
Pros:
- Resealable
- Rounded corners
- Look GREAT
- Display window
- Many colors available
- Decent protection from humidity
Cons:
- Provide no crush protection
- More expensive than cups
- Not impervious
Final thoughts on 4x6 mylar bags in general
There are so many options out there for freeze dried candy bags. Many people buy in bulk from larger distributors, and that’s fine, but it’s worth noting that purchasing packaging in smaller lots, especially early on, could be very beneficial.
This is never more true than when you are just starting out because you need to find just the right aesthetic for your brand.
Occasions can dictate the packaging you use just as much as a certain price point can. I found it necessary to reserve our nicer mylar bags for small events and custom orders while saving our cups and cup sealing machine for larger events.
FYI: Candy will last up to 4 weeks in these bags on the kitchen counter in Texas weather.
Pro Tip: Store your filled mylar bags in airtight bins or buckets with lids to preserve them for months.
